Schedule 1-A: Deductions for Tips, Overtime, Car Loan Interest, and Seniors
Schedule 1-A (Form 1040), Additional Deductions, calculates four federal income tax deductions: qualified tips, qualified overtime compensation, qualified passenger vehicle loan interest and the enhanced deduction for seniors. Eligible taxpayers can claim them whether they take the standard deduction or itemize. Each deduction has its own requirements, dollar limit and income phaseout.

These deductions currently apply for tax years 2025 through 2028. This guide explains the 2025 form, including its year-specific reporting relief. Do not reuse that relief automatically for 2026.
Quick reference
Schedule 1-A at a Glance
| Deduction | Maximum before phaseout | MAGI phaseout begins above |
|---|---|---|
| Qualified tips | $25,000 per return, including joint returns | $150,000, or $300,000 married filing jointly |
| Qualified overtime | $12,500, or $25,000 married filing jointly | $150,000, or $300,000 married filing jointly |
| Qualified vehicle-loan interest | $10,000 per return | $100,000, or $200,000 married filing jointly |
| Enhanced senior deduction | $6,000 per eligible person, up to $12,000 jointly | $75,000, or $150,000 married filing jointly |
These are deductions, not tax credits or guaranteed refunds. “No tax on tips” and “no tax on overtime” do not remove otherwise applicable Social Security, Medicare or self-employment taxes. The senior deduction does not repeal taxation of Social Security benefits.
Form purpose
What Is Schedule 1-A?
Schedule 1-A is a two-page attachment used to claim these additional deductions on Form 1040, Form 1040-SR or, where eligible, Form 1040-NR. Part I calculates modified adjusted gross income, or MAGI. Parts II through V calculate the deductions. Part VI adds the results.
It does not replace reporting wages, tips or business income. Report the income first, then claim the allowable deduction in the appropriate part. The total reduces taxable income after AGI has been calculated.
Filing requirements
Who Can Use Schedule 1-A?
Use the applicable parts if you meet at least one deduction's requirements. You do not need to qualify for all four.
For tips, overtime and the enhanced senior deduction, married taxpayers must file jointly. Each person whose tips, overtime or age supports the deduction needs a Social Security number (SSN) valid for employment, issued by the return's due date including extensions. The senior deduction does not require current employment.
The vehicle-loan-interest deduction has different requirements and does not impose that same joint-filing condition. A married-filing-separately taxpayer may qualify under its rules and $100,000 MAGI threshold.
Nonresident aliens must check the Form 1040-NR instructions. They generally cannot claim the vehicle-loan-interest deduction. Estates and trusts considering that deduction use the Form 1041 instructions' worksheet rather than this individual-return schedule. See the IRS nonresident clarification.
Quick comparison
Schedule 1-A vs Schedule 1 vs Schedule A
| Schedule | Main purpose |
|---|---|
| Schedule 1 | Additional income and adjustments used in calculating AGI |
| Schedule 1-A | The four additional deductions discussed here, claimed after AGI |
| Schedule A | Itemized deductions, such as qualifying medical expenses, taxes and charitable contributions |
Taking the standard deduction does not prevent an eligible Schedule 1-A claim. A return can require both Schedule 1 and Schedule 1-A.
Preparation records
Records to Collect Before Filing
| Deduction or calculation | Useful records |
|---|---|
| MAGI and eligibility | Draft return, filing status, dates of birth, SSNs and relevant foreign-income exclusions |
| Tips | W-2/1099 statements, Form 4137 where applicable, tip logs, employer reports, platform statements and occupation details |
| Overtime | Payroll records, regular pay rate, hours, FLSA status and employer-provided qualified overtime figures |
| Vehicle interest | Loan agreement, origination date, purchase documents, VIN, final-assembly evidence and annual interest records |
| Business-related amounts | Income and expense records, allocable deductions and amounts deducted elsewhere |
Retain calculations and supporting documents. A form's maximum deduction is not evidence that you actually received that much qualifying income or paid that much interest.
Form instructions
Part I: Calculate MAGI
Start with Form 1040, 1040-SR or 1040-NR line 11b. Add any required excluded Puerto Rico income, Form 2555 lines 45 and 50, and Form 4563 line 15 through lines 2a through 2e. The result appears on Schedule 1-A line 3.
Without those adjustments, MAGI generally equals AGI. Do not subtract Schedule 1-A deductions before testing their phaseouts. The same line 3 MAGI feeds all four calculations, but the thresholds and reductions differ.
Form instructions
Part II: No Tax on Tips
Eligible workers may deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips per return before the income phaseout. A married couple does not receive a separate $25,000 limit for each spouse.
Which tips and occupations qualify?
Qualified tips generally are voluntary, customer-determined cash or cash-equivalent tips received directly or through an employee tip-sharing arrangement. Card and electronic-payment tips can qualify. Mandatory service charges and noncash gifts generally do not.
The work must fall within the IRS list of occupations that customarily and regularly received tips on or before December 31, 2024. Examples include wait staff, bartenders, certain personal-service workers, rideshare drivers and delivery workers. Check the actual duties and Treasury Tipped Occupation Code list, rather than assuming every tipped job qualifies.
Specified service trade or business restrictions normally apply, but the IRS provides transition relief relevant to 2025. Apply Notice 2025-69 guidance and the current occupation rules together. Being listed does not waive the remaining requirements.
How do you complete the tips section?
Lines 4a through 4c address employee tips. Eligible W-2 box 7 amounts, employer tip reports and Form 4137 may support the calculation. Use the IRS worksheets for multiple employers or businesses. Do not add overlapping W-2 and Form 4137 totals twice.
Line 5 covers eligible self-employment tips. For 2025, qualifying tips must be included in the applicable Form 1099 totals and supported by records. Cash tips omitted from those statements are not automatically deductible merely because you report the business income.
The self-employed limit is net income from the relevant business after allocable deductions, including applicable deductions for part of self-employment tax, retirement-plan contributions and health insurance. It is not always Schedule C line 31 alone. Apply the limit separately to each business.
Lines 6 through 13 combine eligible amounts, apply the cap and calculate the phaseout. The reduction is $100 for each complete $1,000 of MAGI above $150,000, or $300,000 jointly. Line 11 rounds the quotient down.
Example: A single filer has $18,000 of otherwise qualifying tips and $160,500 MAGI. The $10,500 excess produces ten complete $1,000 increments. The reduction is $1,000, leaving a $17,000 deduction on line 13.
Form instructions
Part III: No Tax on Overtime
The deduction covers qualifying FLSA overtime premium, not all pay earned during overtime hours. It generally concerns the extra “half” in required time-and-a-half compensation under Section 7 of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
The limit is $12,500, or $25,000 jointly, before phaseout. Overtime pay remains reported income. The deduction does not generally eliminate payroll taxes.
What overtime does not qualify?
State-law or contract overtime is not enough if the employee is exempt from the federal FLSA overtime rules. Weekend, holiday, shift-differential and double-time pay are not automatically fully deductible. Salaried employees can qualify if their employment is covered and nonexempt; the salary label alone does not decide eligibility.
Firefighters, law-enforcement employees and some hospital workers may have special FLSA work-period rules. Confirm the applicable rule rather than assuming every employee uses a 40-hour weekly test.
How do you calculate qualified overtime for 2025?
Enter qualifying amounts included in W-2 compensation on line 14a and applicable 1099 amounts on line 14b, following the instructions. Do not copy all W-2 box 1 wages or assume working extra hours as an independent contractor creates qualified overtime.
For 2025, qualified overtime was not required to be separately identified on those forms. Employer statements and the IRS-permitted reasonable methods can support the amount. Keep the payroll records and calculation.
Example: An eligible employee earns $28 per hour and receives $42 per hour for 120 qualifying overtime hours. Total overtime-hour pay is $5,040. The qualified premium is $14 × 120, or $1,680. Assuming income below the phaseout and no other limitations, the deduction is $1,680, not $5,040.
When records show only total qualifying time-and-a-half pay, dividing that total by three identifies the half-time premium. Do not use this shortcut indiscriminately for double-time pay or mixed pay categories.
Lines 15 through 21 apply the cap and reduce the deduction by $100 per complete $1,000 of excess MAGI above $150,000, or $300,000 jointly. Line 19 rounds down, like the tips calculation.
2026 distinction: The IRS's August 2026 overtime FAQs require separate reporting beginning with tax year 2026, including W-2 box 12 code TT for employees. The 2025 reporting relief does not continue. An omitted or understated 2026 amount generally requires an employer correction before the additional amount can support the deduction.
Form instructions
Part IV: Car Loan Interest Deduction
The deduction is for qualifying vehicle-loan interest, not principal repayments, the vehicle price or lease payments. The maximum is $10,000 per return before phaseout, not $10,000 per vehicle.
The loan generally must originate after December 31, 2024, be incurred by the taxpayer to purchase a qualifying vehicle for personal use, and be secured by a first lien on that vehicle.
The vehicle must:
- Begin its original use with the taxpayer. Used vehicles generally do not qualify.
- Be a car, minivan, van, SUV, pickup or motorcycle manufactured primarily for public-road use.
- Have a gross vehicle weight rating below 14,000 pounds.
- Undergo final assembly in the United States.
An American brand name is not proof of U.S. assembly. Check the vehicle label or NHTSA VIN decoder, and retain the result.
Personal use, refinancing and other exclusions
The 2025 instructions generally test whether personal use was expected to exceed 50% when the purchase loan was incurred. A qualifying mixed-use vehicle needs coordination with business deductions. Interest already deducted on Schedule C, E or F cannot also be deducted on Schedule 1-A.
Refinancing an eligible loan can preserve eligibility for interest on the outstanding qualifying balance if the first-lien requirement remains satisfied. Extra cash borrowed is not automatically eligible. Interest attributable to rolled-in negative equity from a traded vehicle or separately financed ineligible items must be excluded.
Complete lines 22 through 30
Line 22 lists each VIN, qualifying interest deducted elsewhere and the remaining qualifying interest claimed here. Attach the required statement for more than two VINs. Use actual eligible interest records, not total monthly payments.
Apply the $10,000 cap on line 24. The deduction decreases by $200 for every $1,000 or fraction of $1,000 of MAGI above $100,000, or $200,000 jointly. Line 28 rounds up, unlike tips and overtime.
Example: A single filer has $3,000 eligible interest and $110,500 MAGI. Divide the $10,500 excess by $1,000 and round up to 11. The reduction is $2,200, leaving an $800 deduction on line 30.
Form instructions
Part V: Enhanced Deduction for Seniors
Eligible taxpayers can claim up to $6,000 each, or $12,000 on a joint return when both spouses qualify. For 2025, the form's age test generally requires birth before January 2, 1961. A taxpayer who died during 2025 must have reached age 65 by death under the IRS age-counting rule.
This benefit is separate from the additional standard deduction for age or blindness. An eligible itemizer can also claim the enhanced senior deduction. Receiving Social Security is not required, and the deduction is not a blanket Social Security tax exemption.
Lines 31 through 35 reduce each eligible person's $6,000 by 6% of MAGI above $75,000, or $150,000 jointly, with a floor of zero. Lines 36a and 36b apply that result to each eligible spouse. Line 37 totals it.
Example: Both spouses qualify and joint MAGI is $160,000. The $10,000 excess reduces each $6,000 amount by $600. Each spouse receives $5,400, so the joint senior deduction is $10,800.
For one eligible person, the deduction reaches zero at $175,000 MAGI for an eligible nonjoint filer or $250,000 jointly. The joint phaseout calculation applies separately to each eligible spouse, not once against a combined $12,000.
Filing guidance
How to File Schedule 1-A and Report Line 38
- Complete income reporting and Part I MAGI.
- Complete only the deduction parts for which you qualify, with supporting worksheets when required.
- In Part VI, add lines 13, 21, 30 and 37 on line 38.
- Carry line 38 to Form 1040/1040-SR line 13b, or Form 1040-NR line 13c where eligible.
- Attach Schedule 1-A to the return and retain the supporting records.
For example, an eligible $1,680 overtime deduction plus an $800 vehicle-interest deduction, with no other Schedule 1-A deductions, totals $2,480 on line 38. That is a deduction from taxable income, not a $2,480 refund.
Review related calculations, including the QBI deduction on Form 8995, when applicable. Schedule 1-A can change taxable-income-based calculations without reducing AGI.
Most 2025 calendar-year individual returns were due April 15, 2026. A valid extension generally allows filing until October 15, 2026, but did not extend payment time. Check IRS deadline exceptions.
If already filed, review whether Form 1040-X is appropriate. The IRS's May 2026 tip-occupation update specifically notes that final occupation rules may support a new or changed deduction on an amended 2025 return.
Review checklist
Common Schedule 1-A Mistakes
| Mistake | Review step |
|---|---|
| Deducting all overtime wages | Isolate the qualifying FLSA premium |
| Omitting tip income because it is deductible | Report income first, then calculate the deduction |
| Using Schedule C profit as the only tip limit | Include other allocable business deductions |
| Rounding all phaseouts the same way | Tips/overtime round down; vehicle interest rounds up |
| Deducting car payments or used-car interest | Check qualified interest, loan and vehicle requirements |
| Treating $12,000 as every senior's allowance | Test each spouse's age, SSN and phaseout |
| Applying 2025 reporting relief to 2026 | Use the rules for the actual tax year |
These checks belong within a firm's broader individual-return preparation review, not just the final deduction total.
Filing questions
Schedule 1-A Frequently Asked Questions
Can I claim multiple Schedule 1-A deductions?
Yes, if you independently qualify for each. Add the allowed amounts on line 38. Do not deduct the same income or interest twice or assume meeting one deduction's income threshold satisfies the others.
Does Schedule 1-A reduce AGI?
No. It generally reduces taxable income after AGI is calculated. This distinction matters for other benefits and taxes that use AGI or a specific MAGI definition.
Is the $6,000 senior deduction a refundable credit?
No. It is a deduction. Its tax value depends on taxable income and the complete return. It does not guarantee a refund or turn $6,000 into a payment from the IRS.
Does no tax on overtime change my paycheck automatically?
No. The deduction does not automatically remove withholding or payroll taxes. Eligible employees can review their Form W-4 using current IRS guidance. Final eligibility and the allowed deduction are determined on the return.
Where can I download Schedule 1-A and its instructions?
Download the 2025 Schedule 1-A PDF. Its instructions are part of the Form 1040 instructions, not a separate Schedule A instruction booklet.
